Suchitra Sen’s birth place was Sen Bhanga Bari village of Belkuchi Upazila of Sirajgonj District. Her father Late Karunamoy Dasgupta was the headmaster of the local school and her mother Late Indira Devi was a house wife. She was their fifth child and third daughter. Suchitra Sen is a Grand Daughter of Famous Poet Sree Rajonikant Sen. She had formal education in Pabna. Sen married Dibanath Sen, son of an industrialist Adinath Sen,in 1947. And They had one daughter, Moon Moon Sen, who is also an actress. According to a reliable source, her success in the film industry strained her marriage.

Sen had launched herself into Bengali films in 1952 and got successful . But she could not strongly establish in Hindi films.
Though Suchitra Sen debuted in films with Shesh Kothaay in 1952, it did not hit the screens. Later, she acted opposite Uttam Kumar in ‘Sharey Chuattor’, a film by Nirmal Dey. It was a box-office hit. And, subsequently, Uttam-Suchitra became a leading pair. They went on to become the icons for Bengali dramas for more than 20 years. She had acted in 30 of her 60 films with Uttam Kumar. She received a Best Actress Award nomination for the film Devdas (1955), which was her first Hindi movie.

She refused to take Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest cinematic award in India, to keep herself away from the public eye.
